A Sundance Movie Review: Nuummioq

Writer Tanzila Ahmed is at Sundance, America’s premiere festival of indie flicks, held yearly on the snowbound streets of Park City, Utah. From her home base at the Taqwacore house (peopled with those who produced the film of the novel being shown there and the bands that soundtrack it), Ahmed will bring us a daily dose of indie celeb news. Learn more about her and her work here. And read her past blogs here.
Out of Greenland comes a beautiful movie about a man coming to terms with being deathly ill. The lead character Malik (played by Lars Rosing) goes out on a boating trip that goes wrong, and finds himself on a journey where he has to grapple with mortality. It is an elegant movie dealing with very deep issues in a tangible and troubling quietness. Placed in the gorgeously scenic Greenland and scored with indie music, Nuummioq‘s visual and audio elements will keep you engaged. We sat down with the Nuummioq crew at Sundance and this is what they had to say.
Nive Nielsen (far left in the above interview) sang a few of the songs in the soundtrack to Nuummioq. She takes us for a walk on Main St. with the crew and cast as her back up singers. That is, until we get interrupted.
We found a quiet place outside and Nive sang (and kazoo-ed) us a song in her native tongue.
