Bands We Like: Brazilian Indie Rockers Holger

Holger knows they’re a pretty unique group. So unique that they have trouble finding bands to open for them in Brazil, where indie rock doesn’t exactly dominate the music scene, the band says.

But the stubbly cute quintet is loved pretty much anywhere they play. They fall under the smart, sweet pop rock umbrella of Vampire Weekend, using  Afropop percussion and a tint of their home country’s axé and calypso.

The band hasn’t released an album yet, but with just two EPs under their belts they’ve already played  SXSW, they’ve opened for No Age and Matt & Kim, and in September they’re heading to New York’s lower east side music venues, where, well, Vampire Weekend actually played in their seminal days.

I searched everywhere for a hidden Portuguese meaning for the word Holger, but turns out the band was desperate for a band alias just before a gig, so they picked the name of some Swedish guy they had met. And that’s pretty much the beginning, middle and end of that story, unfortunately.

Their track “Let ‘Em Shine Below” off their latest English-language EP No Brakes is a fine example of their upbeat summery tropical percussion sound with hints of synth.

Check out their new video for it here!
