Bands We Like: Estonia’s Fairy-Voiced Iiris
A depressingly few amount of bands have “it.” In fact, I’m pretty sure I didn’t know what “it” was, until I listened to Estonian singer/songwriter/pianist Iiris.
Because whatever “it” is, she definitely has it.
Estonia’s Iiris (pronounced “eeris”) has the eclecticism, the smarts, the innovation, the pop sound, not to mention the adorable/pretty image to become a huge mega mega mega star.
What makes Iiris really stand out is her singing voice. Sans any effects, she can sing cartoonishly high at complicated intervals, making her some kind of Baltic pop fairy.
She plays piano and synth, backed by lush electronic beats and instrumentation by bandmates with fairytale names (Sethh, Tuf-Tuf, Caco, and Billy-jo).
She has released a few streaming singles like “Gummybear” (RECOMMENDED) and “Astronaut.” But she’s got plenty of other singles, whether they’re performed live on Estonian TV, a’capella, or alone in her room.
Iiris’ group recently opened for her neighbor Instrumenti, who happens to be our favorite group of Latvian pandas.
Still waiting on that debut album though, Iiris. When will I get my overdose of “it”?
