Bands We Like: New Zealand’s Electro Goofballs Golden Axe
“When you’ve got a lot of free time, you can do what you like.”
Wiser words were never spoken.
This matter-of-fact proverb was uttered by eccentric New Zealanders Golden Axe on their new 80′s video game-style synthpop tune “Free Time.” The track, off their upcoming debut album Fantasy Footwork, comes with a video (below) of a bearded dude taking advantage of free time with a little awkward dancing, cats cradle and a stroll through a parallel, Peter Gabriel-esque universe.
It’s the dumbest thing to hit YouTube for awhile, but I can’t stop watching it. The deliberately cheap-looking 80′s graphics and the lanky leading man bring a smile to my face every time. May that guy never learn to dance!
Golden Axe indeed seems to know a thing or two about free time. The duo Chris Cudby and Dave King developed a cult following performing in alleys and streets donning tiaras, big sunglasses and glam wigs. They offer little information about themselves, other than the fact that they play keyboard/waveform and saxophone. According to the band, they got their start at a Burger King and they’ve expanded to bars, galleries and parties.
You humble kids. The duo actually caught the ears of some electro-phile radio DJs in New Zealand, and they’ve been gracing the country’s airwaves for some time (check out one of their podcasts). They’ve scheduled New Zealand tour dates through June, and hell, they have real album coming out! You go, guys!
Most of their stuff is simple throwback electro that could easily have been plucked out of the original Megaman game or something. (FYI, Golden Axe was actually a Sega video game in the 80′s). The band also has a few fun covers, including a version of Michael Jackson’s “Wanna Be Startin’ Somethin’” and Katy Perry’s “Hot and Cold.” Golden Axe can’t really sing, so “Hot and Cold” is quite hilarious.
These are the remaining shows on their tour:
June 18: Stink Magnetic Headquarters in Wanganui
June 19: Mighty Mighty in Wellington
June 25: Refuel Bar in Dunedin
June 26: High Street Project in Christchurch
