Bands We Like: New Zealand’s Futuristic Pop Princess Zowie
I’m no talent agent, but New Zealand’s Zowie has definitive star power.

So enjoy her brand new debut pop single “Broken Machine” while it’s not being played everywhere. Enjoy her futuristic sexy robot look while it’s not being imitated by everyone under the sun. And enjoy those Bettie Paige bangs…just ’cause.
Yes, Zowie is definitely destined to take over the world, because “Broken Machine” has already taken over my brain. The attitude-laden Ke$ha style rap/singing, the cutest, catchiest synthpop hook ever, and of course the “Hey Mickey”-like bridge…none of it will get out of my head. So, I’ve decided not to fight it.
Zowie, formerly known as Bionic Pixie (and Zoe Fleury in real life), may look like an intimidating blast from the future with her Serena Fagence-styled getup, but she’s actually quite darling, if she’s anything like her interviews. Zowie is also a serious drummer, which gives her more street cred than most pop divas could hope for.
The video for “Broken Machine” features Zowie lying around in some seriously cool dresses, surrounded by animated faulty machinery. It’s colorful, adorable, dancey, heartfelt, and guaranteed to take over clubs worldwide.
While we wait for her first album to debut next year, Zowie is appearing at the Viper Room in Los Angeles on Oct. 15, and at the CMJ Music Marathon in New York in late October!
