Bands We Like: Nigeria’s Not-So-Fragile Ego
If you were a beautiful model and a pioneer in Afropop, you’d have an Ego too.
Ego, from Nigeria, was born Jennifer Nwakaego Oduah, and her former modeling career and breakout hit “Omalicha” (sometimes called “Omalicha Nwa,” which means “beautiful one’ in Igbo) have taken Lagos, Nollywood, and my iPod by storm!
And no, it’s not just that unrelenting booty and edgy haircut. “Omalicha” harnesses current R&B conventions — autotune and doubled background vocals — and adds African drum beats and a beautiful, sunny melody that could make a grownup cry. It’s called Afro n B music, and be forewarned: it will be in your head for weeks.
Ego also collaborates from time to time with artists under her label, Questionmark Entertainment. She’s featured on the melodic R&B track “Graduation Day Remix” with producer/vocal coach Harrysong and singer Tito Da. Fire.
Her brand new track with Harrysong, “Thinking About You” is a lovely Afropop R&B duet. Check out the video … and Harrysong’s abs… here!
Ego started as a model for major Nigerian fashion outfits, and was even, unsurprisingly, a contestant in the Most Beautiful Girl in Nigeria pageant, a precursor to Miss World.
As a personality in Nollywood, she’s bound to have some haters. Tabloids first accused her of sleeping with a higher-up to get into the music biz. Recently, she was accused of being gay (not such a friendly title in Lagos) when she was caught pecking her female friend on her birthday.
Like me, Ego rolls her eyes at the headlines and wonders what any of this has to do with her music. Stay above it, girl! You’ve got fans at MTV Iggy!
Check out her video for “Omalicha Nwa.” If you can keep your eyes off her gyrations, you’ll see her dole out some very expensive kisses to some lucky fellows.
