We sincerely hope that Mishal Moore is the next breakout star pouring soulful music into your eardrums. On her new I’m Not A Hipster EP, Mishal hits notes of R&B, UK garage, folk music, even some vaguely classical-sounding things, and packages it all together into something that sounds really, really new.
Mishal grew up in Miami, singing classically and playing piano and trumpet. Along the way, she started to write her own material and eventually quit her day job, moved to New York, and put out a few albums independently. Her end game plan, she says, is to open a after-school theater academy for kids.
In the meantime, we hope she continues to regale us with quality jams. On I’m Not A Hipster, her songs are full of lush arrangements of vocal harmonies, sprinklings of percussion, sly basses, face-eating synths, and even some ukulele, which Moore provides herself. On top of it all is Moore’s otherworldly voice, soaring sometimes and barely whispering at others, sounding like a combination of sunshine and sex.
