Peach Kelli Pop is kind of like what you’d get if The Shangri-Las wrote and recorded everything themselves and gave zero fucks. The band consists of Ottawan Allie Hanlon and whichever friends happen to be free and her self-titled debut LP consists of eleven milkshake-sweet pop tunes adorned with blown-out guitar, bass and drums, plus a cotton-candy veil of effects around the vocals, with lots of tasty tambourine sprinkles all around. Oh, and a little ukulele.
The 2010 release is a true pop confection for people who believe in love and put chocolate syrup on foods that aren’t supposed to have chocolate syrup on them. The cherry on top is the way she makes lyrics about dreamy boys sound heartfelt no matter how tried and true the rhymes.
Get the album from Bandcamp before your next rock’n'roll sleepover party and definitely try to catch the Peach Kelli Pop show if it comes to your town. There will be good times and probably sequins. The band’s overdrive cover of “Da Do Ron Ron” won this writer’s heart at the Atlanta Mess-Around this year. It also nicely encapsulated what Hanlon’s huggable happening is all about.
Currently, based in Ottawa and various locations around the United States, the young musical confectioner is readying a second album and, always the tourin’ fool, there are PKP trips through the US west coast and even Europe planned. So, stay tuned kids and get ready to do the Eggroll.
