Anna Calvi
Anna’s songs transport listeners into a mysterious, David-Lynch-like alternate world, and so it made sense that at points during the show, I looked around and saw a room full of turn-of-the-century time travelers who transformed Bowery Ballroom into a dark Parisian cabaret.
In her eponymous full-length, released earlier this year, she revived a sound that’s never really gone out of style: bluesy, operatic, and sensual. If Django Reinhardt, Edith Piaf, and Roy Orbison were to get together in heaven and form a super-group, perhaps it would sound a little like this band (Anna’s team includes the adroit drummer Daniel Maiden-Wood and percussionist Mally Harpaz, both of whom also sing backup vocals).
