Ayoe Angelica, first and foremost, a serious singer. Raised in a very musical family, 23-year-old Ayoe has been nourishing her artsy bug since she was just a kid. The Denmark-based singer calls Ethiopia her second home, and some proceeds from her first album I Am Amazed were funneled to relief efforts there. Not one for glitz or skimpy outfits, the Danish/Ethiopian songstress will make you swoon with down-home, buttery vocals, and meticulous, eclectic production, and she’s naturally gorgeous to boot. Hints of a jazzier era also mark some of her tracks like “Borring Details of a Missery” and “Left Side,” but producer Plateaux Techniques’ electronic mutations are so innovative, it might be safe to call it avant-soul and leave it at that. She’s keeping busy these days. “Hey, Mister Man On Top,” is one of the more straightforward tracks on her new album Dandelion, and Salon D’Escapade just dropped a smooth down-tempo remix. Ayoe is also on a Salon D’Escapade compilation album, singing a chopped up, practically unrecognizable Tracy Chapman track.
Two albums into her career, Ayoe is redefining soul fusion. Her beats range from down-tempo Groove Armada-style weirdness, to trip hop, to classic soul a la Sade, to pop dance grooves of early Christina Aguilera.
