The Punjabi-American lawyer who makes bhangra hits. An unlikely combination, but Bikram Singh makes it all work, and look like a ton of fun too. The singer moved from India to New York City at 12, and his music combines the lyricism of Punjabi folk instrumentation with the big beats of Asian underground electronica. The combination has led to hits like “Beyonce” his bhangra-laced paean to Jay Z’s wife, and “Kinna Sonna Munda,” where the clean-cut artist wails over pop-perfect production. Both are hits off 2011′s BIK I Am, which burned up the BBC charts. A collaborator with DJ Rekha, and featured on Das Racist’s tracks, Bikram’s music appeals to anyone looking for some juicy South Asian flair.
