You’ll never memorize a Duck Fight Goose, the strikingly original quartet out of Shanghai, song. Just when you think tracks on their debut EP Flow have fallen into a, well, flow, they take a swift, unusual turn into a totally different cerebral composition. “Future Deer,” for example, begins as a psych indie rock track a la Animal Collective, but then it dips into quieter, experimental segments with changing time signatures. “Hainan Dao” begins with a bossa nova rhythm, but before you know it, you’re in ambient-ville surrounded by cat shrieking vocal effects. The whole track ends with a punk riff. What? HOW? Hit play again! Duck Fight Goose is fronted by Han Han, the brains behind the also heady indie group LAVA|OX|SEA. The band gave a peek of their entire debut EP Flow on Neochaedge. Check it out, and prepare for a mind-boggling experience!
Yet it all sounds seamless for Duck Fight Goose. I suppose this is math rock due to the heady, ever-changing counts, but it feels more like a rhythmic mosaic, where brilliance lies in their transitions. They’ve also been out and about performing live in China.
