The distance from Osnabrück, Germany to Kingston, Jamaica is about 5034.8 miles. Tilmann Otto, affectionately known as Gentleman, effortlessly makes that gap a lot smaller. The reggae crooner didn’t mean to become a globally recognized star, but he just couldn’t stay away from the signature sounds of island (which he didn’t visit until the age of 18!). Smooth roots reggae and positive, party-ready dancehall have been the name of Gentleman’s game since ‘98. Eleven years later—after plenty of spiritual searching and cross-country traveling—Gentleman has two number one albums (Confidence and Diversity) under his belt and a lot more goals underway.
