Pixelord

First appeared on IGGY: January 24, 2011

Russias’ Pixelord takes the sound of chiptunes and fuses it with the current glitchy trend in electronic music. His tracks are packed with raw sounds in arpeggio. His 2011 release Fish Touch EP lays our favorite memories of classic video games over dubstep in 3/4 time, glitch hop rhythms, and a handful of other beat styles. A single song “Drinky” contains sounds from the bass-heavy future, and sounds from the neon pixel past. Perfect for electronica nerds getting sick of the chiptunes.

Pixelord, or Alexey Devyanin, throws down electro styles from 8bit to dubstep to ambient weirdness. He’s kept Moscow ravers on their feet for years under different monikers, including the more ambient-bent Gulstksra.  If there was an actual video game to accompany his music, it would look something like the cover of Fish Touch. The protagonist: a naked man in stockings with the head of a cyclops tiger. The enemies: various animals and flowers. The epic face-off takes place on the floor of a VW bus.
