The Rubberbandits

What do you call an enigma wrapped in a plastic bag? The Rubberbandits. The prankster hip hop comedy duo from Limerick City describe what they do as “straddling the comedy and music worlds like a tracksuit wearing collosus” and claim that they’ve “emerged as the country’s surrealists beyond compare.” True. Dave Chambers (Blindboy Boat Club), Bob McGlynn (Mr. Chrome) have sold out Dublin gigs, opened for Ice Cube, famously hosted a Mustache Party (if you don’t know, don’t ask), and saw their music video for “Horse Outside” surpass 6 million YouTube hits.
But much like their US counterparts, Das Racist, the anarchic humor is shot through with wit, wordplay, erudition, and a fierce sense of history. And, of course, how sniffing glue got them through a terrible hookup with a girl. Everyone’s got a method.
Their songs are danceable and funny, to the point that you don’t know whether to sway and bounce or laugh you’re a** off. The mix of hip-hop lyricism and R&B jam coupled with their quick, sly humor promise to be a good show if you ever get the chance to see them. In the past they’ve been known to play phone pranks. If you can get your hands on to some of those recordings you’re golden.
