2011 MTV Video Music Awards: Lots of Drama But No Host

2011 MTV Video Music Awards: Lots of Drama But No Host

By Beverly Bryan | August 29, 2011

The MTV Video Music Awards were back again last night, the grand tradition of scene stealing and air kisses upheld for another year. Tyler the Creator won Best New Artist (half his speech had to be muted) and Lady Gaga won Best Female Video for “Born this Way.” And Katy Perry won Video of the Year. But who cares who won? The point of the VMAs is over-analyzing the antics and fashion choices of the attendees!

The Internet is abuzz with the kiss that didn’t happen between Michael Jackson Vanguard Award winner Britney Spears and Jo Calderone, Lady Gaga’s cringe-inducing drag king persona. (However, in this case, as always, Madonna was the real person Lady Gaga was nakedly trying to impersonate.)  And Nicki Minaj accepted the award for Best Hip Hop Video nonchalantly rocking an outfit that exposed Gaga as an amateur.

In less ridiculous news, Jay-Z and Kanye West killed it in stereo with a performance of “Otis” and Bruno Mars delivered a classy musical tribute to the late Amy Winehouse. Lil’ Wayne even made a triumphant return. But Beyoncé still stole everyone’s thunder by performing “Love on Top” and being pregnant.

If all the over-the-top moments from last night leave you feeling nostalgic for show stoppers of days gone by, you can relive almost all of them in under 60 seconds with MTV Hive’s GIF wall of classic VMA performances. Full warning: It may be difficult to look at it for only 60 seconds.

The 2011 VMAs were unusual in one way. There was no host, a move that inspired its own spate of online buzz. It seems the producers just couldn’t pick the right person to do the honors. Let’s help them get the jump on next year. Vote in our poll for the personality who should carry 2012′s awards!
