Are Japanese Metal Legends Boris Going Pop?!

Are Japanese Metal Legends Boris Going Pop?!

By toksala | February 23, 2011

Face-melting rock trio Boris have released sixteen studio albums over the years. They’ve recently announced that they’ll release two more on April 26 on Sargent House.

One is called Attention Please and the other is titled Heavy Rocks. Heavy Rocks is all new material but it also happens to be the name of an album they put out in 2002. For a band like Boris, there really isn’t much that’s weird about that. What might actually be strange even for them is that it’s supposed to be pretty catchy. Promises have been made that it won’t be a pop album per-se, but there is every indication that it will sound like nothing they’ve done before — in the sense that it won’t melt your face.

In another departure, all vocals will be sung by lead guitarist Wata. She has sung on solo projects and singles in the past but this will be a first for a Boris album. This alone is no doubt cause for rabid anticipation.

But could Boris really be going for hooks? Are they selling out? Crossing over to the dark side? (No, silly, the other dark side.) Really? This is the Wata who cut her fearsome teeth in Japan’s secretive hardcore punk scene. This is also the band that titled one of their evilest albums Smile and describes themselves as “fangs anal satan.” In other words, there’s also at least some chance that they are in fact messing with us. I hope they never stop.
