Artist of the Week: Mexico City’s Party-Maker, Bufi

By Halley Bondy | November 2, 2012

It’s been an insane week for MTV Iggy’s Artist of the Week. Between the hurricane that razed New York City and this very cutthroat competition, we had our work cut out for us. But in the end it was Mexico City’s Latin nu-disco king Bufi who took the crown. Congratulations Bufi!

For a few years now, Bufi has been churning out detailed nu-disco originals and crafty remixes, deftly walking the line between dancefloor sophistication and crowd-pleasing fun. He had already been working Mexico City’s best parties for a while (and occasionally popping up on Kitsune releases) when he turned heads in the international EDM scene with a winning remix of Little Dragon’s “Ritual Union” that superimposed hard ‘80s-style analog funk over Yukimi Nagano’s slowed-down vocals. Soon after, Bufi found himself heading the bill at Vice’s “Hola Indio” party tour in the US, performing at the Mexico City’s giant Corona Capital festival, and with an inbox full of invitations to play in the electronic-music holy land known as Europe, where he’s heading in November.

Check out our interview with Bufi, and enjoy “Labios Rojos.”
