Welcome to the weekend! It’s time to go home and sleep for two days. But mostly, it’s time to choose MTV Iggy’s Artist of the Week.
This is a round-up of the best global bands we found this week (we know…there aren’t too many. There was a national holiday, dammit). You have a week, until next Friday morning at 11 a.m. USA Eastern Standard Time to vote for your favorite new artist on MTV Iggy, using the bottom poll.
The band with the most votes will be have prime real estate on our homepage this week, along with a tell-all interview.
May the best band win!
Mia Dyson wails on passionate, introspective, guitar-driven blues rock that hearkens a specific pinnacle in rock ‘n roll, a la Melissa Etheridge (with the same smoky power-voice, too!). Mia made a name in her home Australia by supporting majors like Stevie Nicks, Eric Clapton and Bonnie Raitt, but now she’s tackling the dreaded US market.
The Warsaw-based musician Coldair (who also pulls double duty with ambient outfit Kyst), crafts delicate, nostalgic, haunting folk music. Live, the band can blossom to five or six people. But, as evidenced by last year’s album Far South, this is the vision of one man, yearning to dig through the fog of memory and make sense of it all.
Gato Preto is an invitation, no, a challenge to dance. The Germany-based duo with respective roots in Africa throws down the gauntlet even as they don their party costumes. But those who accept the challenge should be prepared, this pair’s mix of African and Latin rhythms with modern beats like moombahton or their own term favela house, is as unpredictable as it is dependably irresistible. The rules are subject to change.
And the winner is….
