Big Freedia: Twerkin’ It in 2013

By Lauren Zupkus | January 7, 2013

Whatchu know about bounce music? If you don’t know much, Big Freedia is your go-to guru. The transgendered diva set the bar six-inch heels high for the New Orleans based dance genre with a killer set at SXSW in early 2012. Now, Big Freedia is taking her show on the road with a tour that kicks off on January 18 in Tampa and ends in San Diego (tour dates below.)

Bounce, a genre that generated in the NOLA area in the early 90s is defined by its energetic, hypersexual sound. And Big Freedia, with her team of bootypoppers and songs centered on ass-shakin’ certainly fits the bill.

Upcoming film projects on Ms. Freedia include a documentary entitled “Almost Famous,” set to premier at the 2013 Zurich Film Festival and a Pitchfork TV 30-minute mini-doc. While Big Freedia’s technicolor, over the top personality will ensure entertained audiences, perhaps it will also fill a void in the hip-hop and dance community where LBGTQ acceptance sometimes goes unspoken. First Frank Ocean, now Big Freedia? We shall see…
