OK, this is pretty exciting. Novo MPB ingenue Tulipa Ruiz is coming out with a new album this July. Called Tudo Tanto, folks back home are already calling her the greatest artist of her generation based on this album. No joke.
Tulipa’s first album Efemera, was as soothing as it was ear-wormy. But seeing her live, you get that Tulipa is actually an avant-garde punk goth who happens to hit the high notes like Joni Mitchell. Judging from interview in Folha de Sao Paulo today, it looks like Tudo Tanto is going more in that direction. The article called it “mature.” Yeah, girl, blossom – and other flower-type metaphors about growth.
Of the eleven songs on the album, she wrote two, and the rest were co-written with her brother and producer Gustavo Ruiz, as well as other Brazilian musicians like Criolo.
That’s all we’ve got so far. No sounds we can link out to. But check out this video of her from the studio in April — even if you can’t understand Portuguese, her excitement is kind of infectious:
