In case you missed it: a few weeks back, jazz legend Tony Bennett released a nifty project called Viva Duets, a duet album featuring the crooner-in-chief partnered up with the stars of Latin music including Juan Luis Guerra, Gloria Estefan and Marc Anthony.
Oh, and Romeo Santos. Yes, you read correctly – Romeo, the former lead singer of Bronx-born bachata boy band Aventura.
I was really hoping this meant Tony Bennett would channel some heartbreak sing us an angsty Dominican bachata, but alas, #IMPERALISM, and we got Romeo singing jazz standards in his pretty, reverb-soaked falsetto. Peep below as Romeo executes a few Spanish-language verses on “Rags To Riches” originally a Bennett hit in 1953. And it’s not bad at all, not one bit.
It’s been something of a banner year for Romeo – after leaving Aventura to step out as a solo artist, he sold out three nights at Madison Square Garden, scored a few hit singles and recorded a song with Usher. Go team DR.
