Feeling elegant? How about experimental? How about both? Feeling maybe a little Hong Kong In The ’60s? The dreamy UK synthpop trio is letting you decide free of charge. You can download their new EP Places from their website, and just kind of see where things go from there. It’s low-pressure music and that applies to both their sound and the delivery system.
Like a lot of our favorite place-name bands, they are not from the place they’ve named themselves for. And they are much too young to remember the ’60s. They’re cute kids from London, but they say the are influenced by early electronic pop, Italian film soundtracks and, yep, “1960s Chinese music.”
That’s actually paints a pretty good picture of what your getting from these guys. Places is packed with richly textured vintage keyboard melodies that walk an oddly graceful line between evocative and totally corny. The swishy, squishy keys and synthetic bell tones will transport to you to a classy space-lounge from long ago. It will definitely not stress you out.
Basically, if you’ve ever wished that Pizzicato Five was a little more chill — maybe a little more like Asobi Seksu — then this is your new favorite band.
Sound like your froth of choice? Well, if you find you do enjoy their mostly instrumental eight-track EP, rejoice because the full-length is on its way!
