This is awesome. One-third of the Russian punk Putin protest group Pussy Riot has been freed! She gave an extensive interview to The Guardian, in which she described Pussy Riot’s unfair treatment in court, and discussed future plans to take down Putin.

For context: in February, five members of the Moscow music/art/political collective stormed a historically pro-Putin church and staged a performance in protest of the country’s decades-old regime. Three of them were given a two-year jail sentence for “hooliganism motivated by religious hatred.” Their story became an international sensation, imposing worldwide on the Russian government and its treatment of Putin opposition.

Here are some gems from Yekaterina Samutsevich, who was freed when her lawyer argued that she was booted from the church before the protest began:

“I don’t think it will all over be over soon…It will only be over when Nadya and Masha get out.”

“The trial was built in such a way that we couldn’t defend ourselves. They didn’t listen to us.”

“I want to do art and continue what I was doing – but I can’t say yet in what concrete form.”

“One needs to change one’s thinking, you need to think, on the contrary, about fighting, about gathering strength for the struggle.”
