Brazilian cheese ironist João Brasil has put his hands on a sample idea so good that we just wonder why no one’s done it already — a baile funk song that mashes up the iPhone’s default marimba ringtone. Why didn’t you think of that, right? There’s more: completing the new song’s trifecta is Marina Gasolina’s shrieky sing rap, a badass style she mastered as the original vocalist for Bonde do Role. Maybe constantly jet-setting over the Atlantic between Rio de Janeiro and London, where João is now based, makes you smarter.
“Funk do iPhone” is out next week on German label Man Recordings, with remixes by DJ Sabo, Sheeqo Beat and DJ Cremoso, but you can peek the video now. Watch it and you will be rewarded with footage of children with intense facial expressions 1) playing synchronized marimbas and 2) busting carioca funk moves. But you might want to skip the first thirty seconds of the video, where a clip of an eye-glazed CBS reporter at the original iPhone’s unveiling will just make you wonder — was 2007 really that lame?
Watch out for João Brasil’s “Funk do iPhone,” featuring Marina Gasolina, out on Dec. 5.
