Gorillaz Leak New Single “Stylo,” ft. Mos Def and Bobby Womack

By toksala | January 21, 2010

Featuring the combined talents of Iggy fave Mos Def and R&B crooner Bobby Womack, the track is a down-tempo, electro-backed rap meant to hypnotize.

Womack told RS that he turned down the project until his daughter chimed in. “The only thing that convinced me was my daughter said, ‘Dad, you got to do this. They’re awesome.’ I said, ‘You’re hip to them?’” (Note: Supposedly, Womack also thought Gorillaz was a band of actual gorillas. Got questions about that thought process? Us, too.)

And while we don’t know what Womack’s character will look like, it’s been reported that Mos Def will play an animated character named “Sun Moon Stars.”

Here’s how we’re guessing the conference to choose that name happened:

Illustrator Jamie Hewlett: “Oh yeah, Mos Def, what do you want your character’s name to be?”

Mos Def: “Hmmm… Like a combination of all of the most important things in the world, I guess?”

Hewlett: “Uh huh.”

Mos Def: “Oh. And also a name that sounds like a Care Bears character. Or something vaguely Navajo.”

The real “story” behind the concept album / cartoon is pretty cool. According to a press release, this time around, “The band have taken up residence, recording on a secret floating island deep in the South Pacific, a Plastic Beach HQ, made up of the detritus, debris and washed up remnants of humanity. This Plastic Beach is the furthest point from any landmass on Earth; the most deserted spot on the planet.”

Guests elsewhere on the album include Snoop Dogg, Lou Reed, De La Soul, Mark E. Smith from the Fall, Gruff Rhys of Super Furry Animals, and Mick Jones and Paul Simonon of The Clash.

The band’s Murdoc Niccals wrote about the “Stylo” leak on his Twitter: “A leak! A leak! Plastic Beach has sprung a leak! One of those Russian pirates has put a bullet hole in my island! My single’s leaked! STYLO!” He doesn’t look too upset. The single officially drops on January 26th.
