Tattoos can express everything from creative self-reflection to lifelong mistakes. Love them or loathe them, it’s clear that the ink trend is alive and well in K-pop.
To name a few, Super Junior’s Shindong and Sungmin, Lee Hyori, B2ST’s Junhyung, and 4Minute’s Hyuna are all part of the growing ink trend. So in the Kpop industry where their moves are highly scrutinized, what do these tattoos mean for our favorite artists?
In the case of JYJ’s Jaejoong on Elle TV on March 18, 2011 he stated that he has “never once regretted” getting his tattoos, and attaches great significance to each. Unfazed by their stigma, Jaejoong seems, among many other Kpop artists to be proud of his ink.
Another controversial tattoo collection would be that of Big Bang’s G-Dragon. Never one to play it safe with his image, he once said, “To me, fashion is not a price tag or a brand but a pair of wings that I put on in order to show you my real colors.” While many VIPs have expressed their distaste for his tattoos, it seems G-Dragon doesn’t mind wearing his heart on his sleeve permanently.
Additionally Jay Park who is always ready to show off his new tattoos on Twitter, has recently added many to his growing collection. While his image is one that blurs the line between K-pop and hip hop, his message about his latest lion head tattoo stating “Heart of a lion, unbreakable spirit” is identifiable across both genres.
