Admittedly, when we heard some of our favorite Japanese bands like Boris and Shonen Knife were doing a My Bloody Valentine were were stoked but it was a little hard to picture how such a diverse group of band we’re going to interpret the shoegaze legend’s songs. Well, the compilation Yellow Loveless (that’s the name) is out now and the answer is they interpreted them brilliantly. True to pop-punk form, Shonen Knife revealed the poppy underpinnings of “When You Sleep” with a ’60s girl group-inspired version and Boris came up with an incredibly drawn out, and incredibly lovely version of “Sometimes.” It’s a hell of tribute and so much more than we hoped for.
