Kat Boelskov’s Strange and Intimate Danish Beats

It’s pretty hard not to dig Denmark’s raw solo diva Kat Boelskov. She’s smart, cheeky, talented, paradoxical (how can one be electro and acoustic at the same time?!!), and she does it all on her lonesome.

That’s right — Kat writes, produces, records, and promotes her stuff all alone. And the whole aloneness of it all really shines on her debut album Amateur. The tracks are deeply uninhibited and playful, and though the muted electro-tinged, multi-instrument indie rock is powerful and nuanced, the best part about Amateur is that it’s rich with Kat’s personality.

She’s a fun feminist, for one. “Girls in Love” bitingly points out the pressure on ladies to find meaning in love. She’s very much in touch with her inner child: “1 Thing You Should Know” is a scatty, screamy affair that was probably concocted in the shower.  She also has a dark side, which is evident in her creepy trip hoppy “Disengage” and the Lykke Li-style pop percussive “Everything.” Throughout it all, Kat is the star. No one else could possibly be on this album with her, so back off.

Now, fans can name their price for a copy of Amateur. She’s also plotting her next move,  which is apparently a new album next year.

Check out Amateur!
