Laura Mvula’s “She” was a total stunner. The soul-inflected, gospel-inspired indie-pop chanteuse from the UK has everyone chomping at the bit, waiting for her debut to come out on March 4. The newcomer — who is being produced by Tom Elmhirst (Adele, Amy Winehouse) — even won our Artist of the Week crown recently.
Her new single “Green Garden” is more upbeat, with a rhythmic, a church-style clap beat and…a vocoder? Yeah, it’s a little abrupt — thought I’d warn you first.
“Green Garden” is missing the sincere intimacy of “She,” and it’s less beautiful by a longshot, but it’s a pleasant, swinging track with a nod to the Winehouse, with Mvula’s voice as relaxed and lovely as ever.
