Hong Kong-born, US-raised singer-songwriter Jane Lui is single-handedly keeping quirky from becoming a dirty word. Take the single “Illusionist Boy” from her forthcoming self-released third album Goodnight Company. It’s a rootsy, country-folk track sung in a rich, breathy voice with a lilt to it like sunlight glancing off water. It’s a little strange but there’s also something familiar about it you can’t quite put your finger on.
Nerdy-cool and stupid talented, she seems able to take any genre from dance pop to jazz as a starting point for her songwriting and effortlessly make it into something uniquely hers.
Watch this adorable video for her song “Jailcard” and see what I mean. Sooo much geek chic! And she has back-up dancers! If you really like that one, well, here’s the link to that one too.
Latest, greatest music crush for sure.
