The Colombian gypsy-jazz outfit known as Monsieur Periné recently put out a music video/short animated film for their song “La Muerte” (“Death”), and, not unlike the band members themselves, it’s quite a looker.
Up until now the band, which has an unexpectedly ginormous following in Colombia, has put out videos mostly in the artfully-shot live performance format. For this one, however, they teamed up with Bogotá-based illustrator Jose Arboleda to make something special. It’s a highly-stylized animated film that playfully meditates on love, death, and, um, puppetry. There’s a definite nod to the sound and visual style of The Triplets of Belleville, but to my taste, the video’s drawing is richer, its colors more brilliant.
