The Missisipian labelmate of Girl Talk, Deepak Mantena has the South in his heart, and samples too. For his project Junk Culture’s new music video, which he may have directed himself (since he makes videos also), his aesthetic matches the lo-fi yet formal vibe of his chill pop music, which features layered instrumentation culled from his own live recordings. While he belts like a proper synth star, he stares at the camera blankly, then wears animal faces. He might be in front of a green screen, he might actually be in a field. Anyhow — it’s pretty neat. Junk Culture’s album Wild Quiet drops July 31st.
