Plásticos y Etéreos Rounds Up The World’s Best Indie En Español

Online music magazine Revista Plástica just dropped a compilation called Plásticos y Etéreos and made it available as a free download on Bandcamp. We should all get down on our knees and thank them for this sweet breath of indie en Español.

The compilation includes fresh tracks from favorites like Chile’s Dënver and Mexico’s Piyama Party. But it also has tracks from completely fresh bands that the world needs to get their ears on. New York City-based Balún’s track “En Medio del Desastre” is an indie-tronic piece of enchantment that sets the tone for a perfectly magical compilation.

The collection includes hip hop, electronic, and rock and pop styles, but still manages to come off as a coherent statement on this moment in independent Latin music. Part of that has to do with the fact that all the songs on the compilation are of equally top-notch quality. Part of it is harder to define.

The ten artists represented here hail from Los Angeles, Barcelona, Monterrey, and London, but they are all pursuing sounds that combine risk taking and experimentation with the ability to delight the ears. They’re all looking forward in some way with their music — even the seemingly regressive rockers like Los Negretes.

This one is labeled volume 1. So I’m feeling forward-looking myself. I’m looking forward to volume 2!
