Okay, guys. Pussy Riot is not exactly a band in the normal sense of the word. They write songs, but they’re really more of a Riot Grrrl inspired art collective. They’re not getting signed to Matador any time soon.
But since members Nadezda Tolokonnikova, Maria Alekhina, Yekaterina Samutsevich were sentenced to two years in prison for their “Punk Prayer” action in Moscow’s Cathedral of Christ the Savior they will be getting a New York solo art show of the collective’s work.
The event is being organized by Russian gallerist Victoria Dushkina in partnership with Amnesty International. The event, to be held Sept. 10 at Lombard-Freid Projects in Chelsea, is a fundraiser for the members and their families.
Some less tony fundraisers are on the horizon as well. A benefit concert at Brooklyn’s St. Vitus bar is scheduled for Sept. 7 and Vivian Girls will play a benefit at The Smell in Los Angeles Aug. 27.
