Sick “Combination”: The Gambian Kora Remixed

By toksala | November 5, 2010

Gambian kora player Jali Bakary Konteh’s track “Combination” is cool to begin with. The son of a traditional West African griot, Konteh brings the twenty-one-stringed harp lute into the modern world with the simmering afrobeat compositions on his debut album Konteh Kunda.

But, after visiting Akwaaba Music, and absentmindedly pressing play on this little player thingy it is now clear that what “Combination” really needed was to be remixed five times and released as an EP.

I cannot stop listening to it. It’s totally addictive.

The track inspired the five different producers put up to this in very different ways. Their reinterpretations range from electro-manic, to dubby to breaky.

It really comes out sounding like five different songs. More to the point, it comes out sounding like five different songs that you will want to hear over and over again.

Listen to the Combination Remixes here and see if you  can turn it off once you turn it on:
