Since before his debut last summer, we’ve rooted like maniacs for Spoek Mathambo. We’re elated, yet wholly unsurprised that he was signed to Sub Pop this week.

Yes, Sub Pop– home to Nirvana, Modest Mouse, and White Stripes — signed the South African futurist bass artist. It seems a bit of a gamble. Spoek is cerebral, heavy, and downright inaccessible for lovers of The Shins, whom Sub Pop launched into gold record fame.

But we’re not complaining. Perhaps innovative, deep, nasty bass is finally getting a footnote in the industry, and it’s no surprise Spoek is paving the way.

His first release on Sub Pop will be the Put Some Red On It EP, which you can preview with free download.
