Fresh of the presses, South African scenester JakobSnake has just unleashed a new mixtape full of steaming-hot African house beats, as part of Okayafrica’s killer “Africa in Your Earbuds” series.
JakobSnake wears many hats: he’s the drummer for Spoek Mathambo, an avid producer and remixer, occasional rapper, and the mad genius behind Cape Town’s AfroClap! parties, which brings sounds from the international global bass scene to the hip-and-with-it crowd that flocks to parties at clubs like Assembly.
On the new mix, JakobSnake hits us with lots of his nation’s bouncy take on house music from DJs in South Africa and the UK, remixed with some more experimental stuff. For the unaware, house music is the sound of black South Africa, pumping out of taxis and township saloons across the country. Among the highlights of the mix: a re-do of Aaliyah’s “Rock The Boat” that somehow makes the R&B classic even sexier than the original.
“Africa in Your Earbuds” features a Afro-centric mix from a different celebrity guest every month – past participants include tUnE-yArDs, Chief Boima and Sinkane, who we recently profiled. Check JakobSnake’s mix here:
