Thom Yorke, Flea (As Atoms for Peace) Covers Joy Division

When our reviewer saw Atoms for Peace last week in New York — he remarked that he felt he was seeing a performance that was truly special.

But maybe he’s a bit jealous of the audience who was able to see the band’s performance in Oakland, California last night. For the encore, Yorke and bassist Flea (whom he recruited for this, his side-project) steamed through a rendition of Joy Division’s “Love Will Tear Us Apart.”

It’s a classic. And it’s got a classic show-off, new wave bassline for Flea to pummel. The performance is a kick. We wish we had been there.

Our guess: He’s just warming this crowd-pleasing cover up for Coachella, where it seems he’ll be one of few British acts who were lucky enough to evade the volcano (!) and make it over.

The first video has better sound, the second gets closer to the action. (Via SG)
