Throwback Thursday: Crazy Beats from ’80s Tamil Movies

Tollywood's Grooviest Composer Ilaiyaraaja Takes It Back

The ’80s marked a huge wave in Tamil filmmaking. The dance moves and budgets were getting bigger, and analogued-out electro-funk soundtracks were fusing with, and at times replacing, Tamil folk music.

Bombay Connection put out a brilliant compilation of movie scores by famed filmmaker Ilaiyaraaja. It’s called Fire Star: Synth-Pop and Electro-Funk from Tamil Films 1985-1989, and it’s pretty mindblowing. Ilaiyaraaja’s beats were quick, minimal and off-the-cuff, as if Kraftwerk had beamed eastward, along with Curtis Mayfield and Grandmaster Flash.

Stream a preview of the compilation below, and watch the video clip for the first track — it’s pretty amazing too.
