Throwback Thursday: “Heatwave” from Motown to Garage Rock

Girl in a Coma Covers a Hot Hot Classic

“Heatwave” has been a popular song title through the ages — from the depression-era Irving Berlin beach musical all to way to this debacle by Wiley. But one of the most influential songs ever to hail the oppressive oven that is outdoors recently received the highest of honors: a garage rock cover.

The original, Grammy-nominated peppy Motown song “Heatwave,” or “(Love is Like A) Heat Wave,” sung by Martha and the Vandellas, charted #1 on Billboard in 1963, and 12 years later, it charted again when released as a single. Then, just three days ago, the timeless love song inspired the badass women of San Antonio rock band, Girl in a Coma.

Hear the original here, then feast your ears on the classic below — this time with raging guitars.
