US Air Guitar Championship Crowns The Spandex-Clad Romeo DanceCheetah

I love writing headlines like that.

Where to begin?

First of all, there is an air guitar championship. It’s real, it’s fabulous, it’s international and it’s so on!

Right now 26 countries are singling out their best representative guitar pantomimer. He or she will fly to Oulu, Finland for the finals on Aug. 27.

The US winner, Romeo DanceCheetah (yes, those two last names go together) was chosen this week. And for damn good reason.

Apparently, air guitar isn’t just flinging your arm up and down. It’s backflipping, it’s working the stage, and for rookie Romeo DanceCheetah  (or Matt Cornelison from Milwaukee), it’s an image.

Donning cheetah spandex leggings, a Michael Jackson-style jacket and a headband, Romeo DanceCheetah owned the audience this week during his air guitar rendition of Daft Punk’s Robot Rock at New York City’s Irving Plaza.

He may be taking a few liberties when it comes to accurate guitar picking, but Romeo dances (well, actually!), he does a back handspring and he knows the music, which is probably good. But most of all, he’s hilarious, energetic, and he brought the ridiculous so much better than his opponents. Check out his performance!

But how will Romeo DanceCheetah fare in Finland, where he’s flying for the Air Guitar World Championships?

So far the champions hail from Malaysia, Mexico, Australia, New Zealand, Brazil and all over Europe. Will he beat the hot, metal-loving Gotika from Mexico? (and from what I see, she’s one of few females in the competition).

How about the ever-accurate seven-time world contender Chris Sweep from Germany?

Or second-time hilarious contender Airgus from Belgium?

I think Romeo DanceCheetah shines. After all, none of them have their own hoodie merch.
