Venezuela’s Algodón Egipcio Drops Dominant Legs and Foot Village Remixes

Remember Venezuela’s young, sexy, and very hazy electro duo Jovenes y Sexys? Remember the male half of the duo? The one with the award-winning stratospheric fro? There, now you remember.

His name is Cheky, and he’s dropping a new album on March 22 under his  other moniker Algodón Egipcio, or “Egyptian Cotton.” In the meantime, he’s infusing some of his chill, atmospheric style into other peoples’ tracks.

He released a remix for Dominant Legs’ “Clawing Out At The Walls” and Foot Village’s hardcore “Lovers With Iraqis.” The latter, in particular, is practically unrecognizable post-remix, like it was given three pounds of Valium.

It’s hard to pinpoint exactly where Cheky works his magic, since he’s so subtle about it. He seems to dump on reverb, pneumatic backdrop synths so consistent that they go unnoticed, and quietly rising and falling electronic syncopated beats. He’s occupying the territory somewhere between shoegaze, lounge, and ambient, never totally overlapping with any of them. Is he coining hazetronica?

Check out his new remixes at Lefse Records.

Also check out his original track “El Ingenio Humano” or “Human Ingenuity,” for a sneak peek of the upcoming album, called La Lucha Constante (“the constant fight”).
