Vybz Kartel Prison Break: “It Was a Joke”

By Beverly Bryan | November 30, 2011

From his skin bleaching to his industry feuds, Jamaican dancehall star Vybz Kartel has always had a talent for generating controversy, even before he was arrested last month on multiple murder charges. And, today he proved he’s still got it without even trying.

Word flew around the Web today that the embattled singer had escaped from prison. There were Tweets suggesting that Kartel was on the loose, and MTV UK and NME both reported the story as an unconfirmed news item despite a swift denial from Jamaican police.

The rumors can be traced back to a detailed but totally fictional account of the jail break published by a site called The Hype Life Magazine.  According to the article:

One prison officer died of a heart attack as a result of the escape and twelve others were injured, including two who were shot with guns that had been smuggled into the prison.

Shortly after 1:00 am, Vybz Kartel, whose given name is Adidja Palmer, took control of the jail holding the prison guards hostage at gunpoint.

Despite the baselessness of the thrilling story, it got Vybz Kartel trending on Twitter. Now Hype Life has published an apology, claiming it was meant as a joke. Apparently, the author’s name is David Meikle and he might be the only one who really thinks the joke the was funny. Unless, of course, Mr. Kartel has Internet access in prison. If he does, he might be laughing now.
