MTV Iggy Special Feature: Car Culture
Car Culture: Mods, Drifting and Import Models
global
If you think drifting exists only in the world of Hollywood mega budget blockbusters like the four films of The Fast and the Furious series, stop what you're doing. Now. The movies only captured the tiniest slice of this hugely popular, internationally growing car culture scene. Especially since drifting is just one aspect of the world of performance modifications. Drifting began over 20 years ago when Keiichi Tsuchiya began practicing over-steering through turns while preserving high exit speed on the mountain roads of Japan. By 1988, he'd organized the first competitive event for drifting, the D1 Grand Prix.
Now widely considered one of the top-level drifting events in the world, the D1 Grand Prix Professional Drift held the fourth and final round of the 2009 challenge in Englishtown, NJ...and MTV Iggy was there to capture the cars in action, interview the superstars of the sport, and talk to organizers, fans, and import models. This year, the D1 GP featured innovative new sensors that monitor the angle and speed of cars on the course for more accurate judging, according to Terrance Jenkins, Competition Director for D1 Grand Prix USA. We also interviewed Forest Wang, the Hawaiian rookie who blew away more experienced drivers in round 1 of the D1 GP held in Anaheim, California; went behind the scenes at Slidewayz Motorsports to check out professional tuners in action; and last but not least, spent some quality time with sexy import models eager to strut their stuff. And don't forget to check out our interview with the Subiegirls! These Subaru-loving women are all about breaking gender stereotypes as they talked to Iggy about customizing their own cars with side skirts, spoilers, splitters and more. The great debate in the auto tuner world is between performance mods versus appearance mods -- where do you stand? The one thing both sides agree on is that car customization can be additive. So watch out!
Are Subarus the best import tuner out there? Over 800 Subaru enthusiasts seemed to think so at the 1st All Subaru Meet at Orange County Choppers in New York. MTV Iggy was there to capture it all! The meet was packed with modified Foresters, Legacies, and most of all, Imprezas, all customized with painted engines, a crazy assortment of decals and...
Marketing cars is pretty simple -- match the hottest models in the showroom with the hottest models on a catwalk. It's no different for import tuners, and these sexy ladies get every engine humming (roawrr!). On September 5th, 2009, MTV Iggy went to Englishtown, NJ to catch D1 Grand Prix Round 4, and from drift racing to import models, the event...
