Born Agnes Monica Muljoto, the Indonesian wonder woman now known as Agnez Mo may be a recent discovery to most English-speaking audiences. Although her 2013 self-titled English language debut album got little buzz outside of her home country, she’s made some serious strides in the West with her latest hit “Coke Bottle,” a collaboration with American rap superstars Timbaland and T.I.. The video is the #1 Most Viewed on MTV and scored nearly 5 million views on YouTube, propelling her even closer to global takeover. In case her music is not impressive enough for you, here are some reasons why we should all be groveling at Agnez Mo’s feet right now.
SHE IS INDONESIA’S #1 WUNDERKIND
She released her first children’s album, Si Meong, (or, The Meow) at the age of six. She released two more by the time she was ten years old.
SHE IS A SOAP OPERA STAR
At 15, she landed her most famous role in the 2001 series, Pernikahan Dini (Dini’s Wedding). She took the lead as Dini, a smart high school student turned young housewife after a whirlwind romance with a young man in Bandung. Now with 16 soaps under her belt, she is currently the highest paid actress in Indonesia, raking in 60 million Rupiah per TV series episode.
SHE WENT DOUBLE-PLATINUM BEFORE GRADUATING HIGH SCHOOL
In 2003, or when she was only 17 years old, she released her more mature debut album, And the Story Goes, which went double-platinum. (No freaky cat suits included!)
SHE’S GOT SERIOUS BOSS POTENTIAL
She studied business law in Pelita Harapan University, a Christian school in a village outside of Jakarta. She is currently working on a degree in political science at Oregon State University. She released her own perfume line, Rêve (French for “dreams”), which sold out within a few weeks. She has also been a judge in Indonesian Idol.
SHE’S GOT CONVICTION
She’s an international activist and philanthropist. She’s raised money for victims of natural diasters and even soccer teams. She was appointed as an anti-drug ambassador of East Asia in 2007, and as an MTV EXIT ambassador against human trafficking in 2010.
SHE’S GOT THE MOST AWARDS OF ANY INDONESIAN SINGER EVER
She has so many awards that she needs her own Wikipedia page for them — all 83 of them, that is — but she’s thirsty for more. In an interview with Global Grind, she says, “When I said I want to win my first Grammy, I want to go international, they started thinking how arrogant I was to even say that.” But given how much of a powerhouse she clearly is, is it truly arrogance or just her pure awesomeness that have gotten her this far?
