Top 10 Beach Bands of 2010!
It’s that time of year again. The sun’s out. The sweat’s rolling. What are you doing reading blogs?! Go hit the beach!
But for the landlocked readers, there’s a timely revival of surfy, chill California rock all over the globe right now. We’re talking heavily reverbed electric guitars, mellow vibes and images of sand. Check out our Top 10 Beach Bands of summer 2010!
Oh, and if you’re in the southern hemisphere, this music will make you forget that it’s winter time!
#1: Best Coast

One of the best new beach-y rock bands is Los Angeles’ Best Coast. Way before they released their debut album Crazy For You, they took the world by storm with sweet, sunny tracks about cats, marijuana and boys. We’ve been following Best Coast for awhile now, and you can read their artist profile here. Also check out our exclusive interview with the band’s Beth Cosentino and Bob Bruno, where they chat about cats and Los Angeles scenesters!
Here’s their hit “When I’m With You” with a video that features a love affair with Ronald McDonald. Creepy? Hardly. It’s totally cool, man.
#2: Raveonettes

Danish girl/boy duo The Raveonettes (pronounced Rave-On-Ettes) was one of our favorite picks of the decade. They’ve been touring with their moody, reverb-heavy beach hits for almost the entirety of said decade, releasing four super chill albums in the meantime. Some Raveonettes songs are definitely sunnier than others, but frontwoman Sune Rose Wagner’s lead vocals remain consistently whispery and reverbed like crazy…in fact, it kinda sounds like waves!
#3: Surfer Blood
These Florida dudes may be the only ones on the list who actually surf. So, their overpowering distorted surf guitar melody in their smash hit “Take it Easy” comes from a genuine nautical place. We are so obsessed with them that we taped not one, not two, but three exclusive live performances of them. You can see them all here.
#4: The Suzan

Brand new out of Japan, the four-piece girl band The Suzan has a garage/punk flavor, but their latest single “Home” is so summery that they had to get on this list. There’s also a discernible, awesome hint of Japanese folk in the studio version.
Its retro keyboard melody, energetic drum beat and easy breezy vocals sound like a beach party.
Check out a live rendition of “Home” in Japan!
#5: The Drums
I don’t know what it is about Brooklyn band The Drums’ smash hit debut rock single “Let’s Go Surfing,” but it kinda reminds me of the beach. I don’t know why. Is it the hair?
#6. Aias

Aias, a trio of ladies from Barcelona consider themselves a summer fun band, and they’re not kidding. Their tunes are adorable, melodic and so reverbed out that it sometimes sounds like an entire choir is involved. The Catalan-language band will inevitably bring a smile on your face, whatever the season.
Their debut album will be coming out in the fall, but in the meantime, check out their tracks here.
#7. Turbo Fruits

We love Tennessee’s Turbo Fruits, not just because of their punky partyime surf rock tracks, but because they’re a bunch of regular, goofy dudes. Check out our hilarious Q&A with them about porno, “cabrewing” (canoeing + drinking) and relentless YouTube criticism.
And check out their surfy road trip track “On The Road”!
#8. Loomis & The Lust
California’s Loomis & The Lust, one of our 25 best bands in the world and Iggy bloggers themselves, have some beach-friendly tunes. But instead of relaxing in the sand to their soulful rock track “Bright Red Chords,” you may wanna cruise around in your sports car with a slick pair of shades on.
#9. Los Tormentos

This Argentinian quartet takes you deep into the surf genre, where reverbed guitar melodies reign supreme and rapid-fire drum rolls are certainly no strangers. The band has been touring for almost a decade, and they recently released an impressive faux grindhouse surf short to go with their track “Il Diavolo In Corpo.”
#10: Surf City
New Zealand quartet Surf City basically combines all of the above and turns it into epic summer rock music. It’s surf, rock and electro with a smidgen of MGMT-style complexity (the lead singers sound alike, actually).
They’ve gained crazy notoriety in their home country, but now with their signing to Fire Records and an LP coming out in September, they’re bound to go global.
