Chillwave In Space

It wasn’t strange to learn that San Francisco’s Blackbird Blackbird has dropped a new single called “Calypso.” After all, the tropics never seem far when the super-chill electronic maestro’s balmy, breezy jams are in the air.

But not only is “Calypso” devoid of steel drums, it’s also a shift away from the usual Blackbird Blackbird sound. The song is a bit darker and it actually feels very far away from the Equator, in the sense that it feels far away from the Earth. The steady rhythm laced with ribbons of decaying synth feels more like an interstellar journey in a craft buffeted by solar winds than a trip to the beach. At the very least it leans more toward toward the starlit shoegaze end of BB’s broad repertoire.

There are no clues as to why this quiet ambient epic is titled as it is, but it’s definitely worth a listen, especially since the track available for free download from Bandcamp.
