Music Video Review
Brandt Brauer Frick Ensemble
October 19, 2011
Electro acoustic outfit Brandt Brauer Frick Ensemble’s video for “Pretend”–their reworking of dubstep diva Emika’s whispery, bleating original and lead single from their upcoming LP Mr. Machine–is sort of what we imagine dinner parties at Salvador Dali’s must’ve been like. You know, getting gussied up in your fanciest lantern-shaped dress then heading over to the surreal fete at a decaying home only to have the debauched, slow-motion merriment devolve into an epic, earth-shaking food fight.
Okay, maybe not. That might be too literal an interpretation because there are some definite allegorical representations –of the economy, politics, art, society — in the clip’s decadent mayhem. And Emika’s glacial vocals repeating “Just for tonight/We can pretend/That we are friends/Friends to the End,” atop BBFE’s suspenseful melodies, charge the video imagery with an ominous, near-apocalyptic verve.
Watch the video and let us know what you think. And if you happen to find yourself in North America, be sure to catch them live as they tour Mexico and the States through mid-November.
