A Belgian Chart-Topper Hits The Diner
After winning the Prix Constantin in France this year (equivalent to a Mercury Music Prize), going platinum in her native Belgium, and throwing down a duet with Cee-Lo Green on his latest LP, it’s safe to say that Selah Sue deserves a shoutout. Nay, riotous applause.
The Leefdaal, Belgium singer looks like Jewel and sings like Amy Winehouse (and oddly enough, Nneka) on her self-titled, chart-topping debut album, which dropped in March. Basking in bluesy soul pop ragga-inspired success, the 22-year-old singer/guitarist is now making face time in a string of music videos.
“Crazy Vibes” is her latest. The sophisticated, swinging rhythm — coupled with her smoky vocals and signature slipshod beehive hairdo — seem to fit right into this tired truckstop diner. Even the #1 sales slot in Belgium couldn’t keep her away from those 24 hour cheese-coated fries (which are probably pretty good in Leefdaal).
Watch “Crazy Vibes” off Selah Sue.
